Walmart India has revealed plans to focus on its fresh produce business and intends to open collection and distribution centres in northern India. The focus is mainly on hardy vegetables such as potatoes, onions, garlic and vegetables with slightly longer shelf life compared to greens and on building a supply chain advantage for fresh produce rather than sourcing it from middlemen. From 2018, the retailer increased direct sourcing from farmers to 25% of the produce sold in its wholesale stores while also committing to accelerated store development in the market.
