Tencent’s leading Chinese social media super-app WeChat has added the short-video function Weishi to its users’ Moments feed. This allows uploads of 30-second video content rather than the standard 15-second direct upload from the user’s smartphone. Weishi has also added a method of creating short-video content from still images. WeChat rarely allows outside apps direct access to its platform, so the move indicates how seriously it is taking the success of ByteDance’s Douyin app, known worldwide as TikTok.
